We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievement of two of our own haumana who recently participated in the prestigious 2024 Molokaʻi Hoe. This race, one of the longest-running annual team sporting events in Hawai'i, is second only to football. The Molokaʻi Hoe is not just a race; it perpetuates one of Hawaiʻi's and Polynesia's most important and historic cultural traditions, while honoring outrigger canoe paddlers around the world.
The Molokaʻi Hoe spans an impressive 41 miles, crossing the treacherous Kaiwi Channel, and tests the limits of physical and mental strength, individual endurance, courage, determination, and teamwork. Paddlers must battle some of nature’s most extreme elements, making this event a true testament to the resilience and spirit of those who participate.
This year, we proudly recognize Kanaloa Abraham, a 10th grader who paddled with New Hope Canoe Club, and Ikaika Kanahele-Nations, a 12th grader who paddled with Waikiki Yacht Club. Their dedication, hard work, and aloha for the sport and culture are truly inspiring. Through their participation, they exemplify the values of teamwork, perseverance, and a deep connection to our cultural roots.
We congratulate Kanaloa and Ikaika for representing our school and community with pride in this remarkable event. Mahalo nui loa to their coaches, ʻohana, and everyone who supported them on this incredible journey. Let's continue to celebrate their success and honor the rich traditions of our ancestors.
