Job Description

Job Title: Educational Assistant (EA)

Date: March 2025

Reports To: Head of School (Po'o Kula)

Salary Range: HGEA Salary Schedule

Work Year: 10 months

Bargaining Unit: HGEA BU03

 

Job Summary:

The EA provides assistance to professional educators, counselors, and others by performing a variety of iinstruction-related and/or counseling or guidance support tasks; and performs other related duties as assigned. Support activities should take into strong consideration student differences and needs and employ a variety of methods that are consistent with Hālau Kū Māna’s Vision and Mission and further advances Indigenous Education. All EAs are also expected to actively collaborate on various school-wide committees and

initiatives.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Classroom Support

  • Perform a variety of academic and non-academic instructional and/or counseling or guidance support tasks in accordance with established guidelines and available resources

  • Assists designated students in, completing specified math, reading, and other academic work by explaining instructions, monitoring students' work procedures, collecting data on IEP objectives, pointing out and correcting errors, and bringing persistent problems to the teacher's attention.

  • Conducts oral or written remedial drills

  • Administers teacher prepared and/or textbook essay exams

  • Organizes and oversees students on excursions

  • Observes and reports on students' overall well-being

  • Performs a variety of related clerical work.

  • Promote a positive learning environment

  • Utilize methods that are consistent with the School’s Vision and Mission

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Communication

  • Maintain open communication with the entire learning ʻohana (students, teachers, administrators, parents, families)

  • Clearly articulate student expectations

  • Create and maintain good rapport with students, ohana and colleagues

 

Administrative

  • Fulfill administrative requirements as required by school administrators and school policy, including maintaining and submitting required student records, completing and submitting administrative forms, attending and participating in staff/faculty meetings.

  • On occasion and when necessary, provide supervisory duties for non-instruction related activities.

  • Collaborative & Active Member of the Hālau Kū Māna Community

  • Actively participate and promote use of the Hawaiian language.

  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service sessions and other instructional training workshops as needed.

  • Manage special projects as assigned.

  • Embrace and uphold the responsibility of Hālau Kū Māna's ʻAe Like and vision and mission; to Hoʻokumu (build grounding and foundation); Hoʻokele (forge direction and connections) and Hoʻomāna (provide sustenance and empowerment.

 

Job Requirements: (Education or experience required to perform this job. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed below)

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent

  • 48 semester credits, baccalaureate level courses from an accredited institution of higher education, OR

  • An Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree or higher from and accredited institution, OR

  • Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment provided by the Education Testing Service (ETS).

 

Preferred Requirements: (Education and/or experience that would enhance the performance of this job)

  • Ability to obtain a Hawaiʻi School Bus Driver Certification* [Preferred]

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: (Indicate critical, required knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the job duties; these should be directly related to the jobʻs core duties)

  • Knowledge and application of standard English language communication skills in order to speak, read and write effectively; and basic arithmetic.

  • Basic awareness of educational program goals, functions and activities.

  • Knowledge of instruction, testing and learning related methods and techniques; social behavioral and developmental problems of students.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions

  • Learn and perform a variety of classroom management, activities, and related clerical tasks

  • Learn and perform specific instruction-related tasks and testing routines

  • Learn to use a variety of instructional materials and equipment

  • Develop a familiarity with common academic, social behavioral, and developmental problems of students and the materials, methods, and techniques used to observe, record, and cope with these problems.

  • Speak and work effectively with students and others

  • Thorough knowledge of the subject area and the ability to develop appropriate curriculum

  • Ability to manage classroom environments (small and large groups)

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, counselor and school administrators

 

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations Preferred: (List certifications, licenses that would enhance the performance of this job)

  • Ability to obtain State of Hawaiʻi Bus Driver certification.*

  • CPR and AED trained.

 

Pay Range:

  • Educational Assistant salary and benefits are determined by the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the Department of Education and the Hawaiʻi Government Employee Association (HGEA).

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently sits, performs desk-based computer tasks, and grasps light or fine manipulation, talk, or hear.

  • Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach, or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

  • Able to participate in school wide cultural activities that may involve hiking and working in various ʻāina based locations.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work is typically conducted in a classroom environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

  • Regular weekly cultural activities and occasional school wide cultural activities may occur outdoors.

  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.

* HKM utilizes 14-passenger school buses to transport students to/from campus to various learning sites. These learning sites are critical components in implementing the school’s Aloha ʻĀina Education (AAE) program. All

teachers assigned to a project will need to seek Hawaiʻi School Bus Driver Certification; other Hālau Kū Māna faculty and staff Hawaiʻi School Bus Driver Certification is preferred.
